In North America alone there is 175 species of mosquitoes. 50 species are found in Missouri and Kansas. Encephalitis viruses are some of the most widely recognized mosquito-transmitted pathogens. The name encephalitis describes the swelling of the brain and spinal cord. One strain of the encephalitis virus is called St.Louis encephalitis virus because of the discovery in St. Louis Missouri. We also have West Nile virus it effects birds, horses and humans. Another common pathogen transmitted by mosquitoes in both Missouri and Kansas is canine heartworm, which is caused by the filarial worm. It is by far the most important filarial worm transmitted by mosquitoes in North America. Other diseases that may be transmitted by the bite of some mosquitoes include malaria, yellow fever, typhus, dengue, chikungunya and zika.
